Ramsey’s advantage swells to 42 points in LMSC standings

Motor Mile Speedway boasts the toughest competition of any weekly series track.

But for drivers Davin Scites and Wayne Ramsey, it was the heat that proved the biggest obstacle to overcome.

In only his second start of 2010, Scites scored his first victory of the season in the opening Kesler Contracting Twin 100 after overtaking pole sitter Kelly Kingery on lap 66. Kingery, who had been hounded by Scites for first from the outset, faded to fourth at the finish behind Ramsey and Brandon Dean.

The pass proved to be the only lead change of the race.

“We had a good car the last time we were here--- we just cut down a tire and didn’t get to show it,” Scites said. “It was a good piece right from the start; there wasn’t many cautions, and we were set up for the short run, but we had a good car right from the start.”

By virtue of the victory, Scites became the only racer other than an FDJ Motorsports driver to take home a trophy in a Twin event this season.

60 laps after snapping the FDJ Motorsports stranglehold, Scites was in pursuit of leader Wayne Ramsey and applying pressure for the top spot when misfortune descended upon the No. 06 team in the finale.

In a bizarre sequence of events, Scites lost power and subsequently lost the battery from beneath the black Chevrolet on lap 96, warranting the fifth and final caution of the evening and staging a four-lap green-white-checker finish.

“Davin was good the second race, and put pressure on me through the majority of it,” said Ramsey from victory lane. “Frank [Deiny] told me we were the two best cars in the race…we just had to hit our marks those last four laps.”

The race was for second in the closing circuits as Ramsey amassed a substantial lead over his nearest competitor. Brandon Dean would fend off a hard-charging Adam Long for second as the checkers fell, with Tommy Lemons. Jr. and Derrick Lancaster in tow rounding out the top five. For Long, the third place finish marked the bourgeoning team’s best effort ever at the Late Model level.

“This is a backup car…it might just be my new primary,” exclaimed Long. “I always knew we could do this.”

Ramsey’s lead continues to expand in the Bull & Bones Late Model division standings. On the heels of his fourth win of the season, Ramsey’s points total stands at 580.

“The car was on a rail the whole second race,” said Ramsey, who finished second in the first race. “The first race the car was really good…I felt like I gave that one away. To come back, redeem myself and get the second one tonight is pretty sweet.”

While Scites and Ramsey were the undisputed class of the field, it was the humid temperatures that topped the headlines.

“After that first race, I overheated a bit myself,” Ramsey joked.

IN OTHER DIVISIONS
COLLISION PLUS LIMITED SPORTSMAN
Two weeks ago, Anthony Barnes’ No. 9 couldn’t catch up. One race later, Barnes couldn’t be caught.

After fighting motor complications that resulted in disappointing finishes of sixteenth and fifteenth in the Twin races two weeks prior, the defending Collision Plus Limited Sportsman titlist was back in victory lane Saturday night for the second time this season after a commanding win in the 50-lap feature.

“This was my kind of track--- hot, slick…145 degrees,” said Barnes. “We’ve had parts fail recently, and that’s what makes you appreciate these wins when you finally get them. We’re just on a roll right now.”

Barnes paced the field through two caution periods, besting runner-up Matt Taylor and Scott Lancaster at the finish.

“If we would’ve got there, getting there and passing him are two different things. Could I get there? I’m not sure I could even get there. But getting by him would’ve been a different story,” Taylor said. “Second place tonight---we’ll take that.”

Michael McGuire and Steve Dalton rounded out the top five.

VIRGINIA METAL FINISHING STREET STOCK
The streak has come to an end.

After five consecutive victories to open the Virginia Metal Finishing Street Stock division season, Brent Bell was dealt a loss Saturday night, finishing third behind winner Andy Schack and runner-up Barry Gregory.

“The weight finally caught up with me,” Bell admitted. “I’m gonna blame it on that, but I get to put my car on a diet this week---I’ll be 75 pounds lighter next weekend.”

Bell, who was handicapped with 75 pounds of extra weight for the second straight race per the Two Wins in a Row policy, couldn’t keep pace with Schack, who led every lap en route to his first victory in several seasons at the .416-mile oval.

“It’s been about four years,” Schack said. “We’ve still got some bugs to work out of this car, but I managed to hold of the rest of the field, and I’m very thankful.”

Tony Vance and Sheryl Carls completed the top five.

NEW RIVER NISSAN MOD-4
Bryan Reedy coasted to his second win of the 2010 New River Nissan MOD-4 season Saturday night, and closed to within 20 points of leader Wayne Corprew in the division standings in the process.

“We fought the car all race long in the heat…it just all finally came together tonight. We won one a couple months ago, but we’ve got one tonight,” Reedy said.

Reedy led every circuit of the 30-lap feature from the pole, out-pacing runner-up Wayne Corprew and Joe White for the win.

Drew Holdren and Rocky Yates rounded out the top five.
